Play the first theme of “Jack the Mack” (Figure 10-8) the first time through without any embellishment. The melody only has whole, half, and quarter notes. The piece is in 4/4 time and in the key of G major.

The sharp at the beginning of each line indicates that the piece is in the key G major or E minor. Therefore, F automatically becomes F. This will hold true for every F (in every range) unless it has a natural sign () in front of it. Chapters 4 and 7 discuss accidentals and key signatures.

The melody of “Jack the Mack” starts with an incomplete measure at the beginning of the piece called a pickup. The pickup here has two quarter notes on beats three and four. Imagine a slow tempo and count. One, two, three, four, one, two and then play the B on beat three. If you’ve already been playing the saxophone for a while, this first theme won’t be difficult for you. Try to articulate as indicated as soon as you have mastered the notes and rhythm. Here, the difference between the long (- = “da”) and short quarter notes (^ = “dat”) is very important.
